“How Dare You?” focuses on Hanni. She will let nothing stop her from realizing her dreams. She became the first woman ever to have had two children after having been diagnosed with the fatal neurological disease, ALS. Her prognosis was two years left to live. She made her decision despite disapproval from everyone around her and against medical advice. She fought the establishment, overcame financial hardships, and built a new career.

These are the words of a self-assured, mentally handicapped woman. She wants to fall in love, get married and have kids, just like other people. At the same time, she is painfully aware of how impossible some of her dreams and desires are. In We're Normally Different, four mentally handicapped actors express their emotions. In the face of their daily routine - doing laundry, making phone calls, shaving, withdrawing money, vacuuming to music and eating a herring at the local fishmonger - their lives appear just as normal as they are different. One wants to be a cameraman, and learn to read and write, another wants to take public transportation and a third is looking for a boyfriend. What's feasible for one of them is out of the question for another. And then there's their personal counsellor, who mediates and decides on important issues like the societal watchdog. With the camera often in close-up and subtle use of music, the viewer gets the chance to meet and experience the personalities, interests and emotions of Fran, Dionne, Maurits and Bertus. |

Claude Messier was an author and person with a disability person. He became a defender of the therapeutic use of cannabis. He was devoted to the rights of people with disabilities. He denounced their being treated like children, and defended their rights to have "normal" lives. He wrote several books which promote empowerment and creativity for people with disabilities. This isn't a film of voyeurism, pity or mockery, but a portrait of a man who lived fully and pushed the limits when most of us would have been stymied. |
